The word periodontal means “around the tooth”. Periodontal disease is one of the most common diseases of humans. It is an infectious condition that attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva. If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus (tartar). When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone. It is now known that there are more than 400 bacterial species of dental plaque found in patients with periodontal disease.
Not only is it the number one reason for tooth loss, research suggests that the entry of bacteria into the bloodstream from infected gums has a significantly negative impact on systemic health. New evidence now links periodontal disease (gum disease) to other diseases such as heart disease, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, respiratory diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and premature births. As a consequence, early complete treatment is critical.
Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease.
